Together with Meta

Taking inspiration from the theory of The Male Gaze, and looking to turn it on its head, Meta approached us for a culturally immersive mixed reality experience developed to raise awareness of how powerful perspective can be. The Female Gaze was created in partnership with Golden Days Festival and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, looking to honour the 50th jubilee of Danish Queen Margrethe II by celebrating overlooked women throughout history.

Putting a 'Female Gaze' on a Famous Artwork

This online WebXR experience (also available in VR at the Charlottenborg Museum in Copenhagen in September 2022) lets users create their own version of the iconic art piece Young Girl Preparing Chanterelles (1892) by Danish artist Peter Ilsted, by plunging them into a 3D version of the artwork.

Customise the lights, backdrop, body language and facial expressions

By changing the lighting, angle, backdrop, body language and facial expressions, users can create a multitude of interpretations and entirely change how we analyze an image. The experience is intended to raise awareness of and facilitate reinterpretations of how women have been portrayed in art history.

Real-time lighting in WebGL

On a technical level, this meant having to create an infinite number of unique shadow and lighting effects, no small task but a challenge we took head on, deepening our real time lighting skills and developing our own soft shadow system, integrated in our NanoGL engine.

An infinite number of reimagined works

Their Female Gaze driven works now created, users can share them in an online gallery where they will not only be able to view others reinterpreted works but in turn plunge into these new interpretations to play around with should they wish, leading to an infinite number of reimagined works, all viewed through a different lens than that of the original piece.
